Transportation: Show us the money
By Steve Sebelius
CARSON CITY — The best moment of the day on Thursday came at the tail end of a joint committee hearing of the Assembly’s taxation and transportation panels. We’ll tell you about it in a second, but first, let’s set it up. Phil Peckman, chairman of the state’s blue ribbon task force on highway funding, [...]

Out in the showrooms on Day Seven of Fashion Week
By Susan Stapleton
I spent most of the afternoon outside of the tents and in the showrooms of European designers who were showing their pre-fall collections before the shows in Milan and Paris. The buyers at Wynn Las Vegas let me tag along to Alexander McQueen and Gianfranco Ferre while they bought from the collections. Look for more [...]

Day Six at the Tents
By Susan Stapleton
You have to admire a designer who attempts to create a collection that will take a woman from Brazil to New York to Paris in one season. Carlos Miele attempted just that. While the hot pink bomber should have stayed backstage, some of the perforated suede jackets and crocodile prints achieved their goal. Designer Catherine [...]

Landry’s folds hand in Biloxi; Mob in Illinois; Bush sticks it to tribes
By David McKee
Tilman Fertitta is calling it quits on his Biloxi aspirations. Landry’s Restaurants is selling its Point Cadet acreage, once mooted for another Golden Nugget property, to Isle of Capri. No price was disclosed. Whatever the outcome of all the buying and selling of land in Biloxi, it seems a dead certainty that the eastern end [...]

Wynn/Packer joint venture just hot air, for now
By David McKee
I guess that the Nevada Gaming Control Board and its New Jersey counterparts can pack up their bags and go home. Steve Wynn has spoken, bestowing a clean regulatory bill of health upon James Packer, Lawrence Ho and Pansy Ho. Whew! Guess that nearly three-year NGCB investigation of Pansy Ho was all for nothing. All [...]

What do Anna Nicole Smith and Sheldon Adelson have in common?
By David McKee
They’re both in today’s S&G. And seem well-acquainted with hair dye. So much news … Anna Nicole Smith, R.I.P.: The blonde bombshell and pop-culture icon met a premature end in a hotel room. And not just any hotel room but one in Hollywood, Florida’s Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. As though buying the Hard Rock [...]

More from under the tents
By Susan Stapleton
Catching up, catching up! So much has happened in the past couple days that it’s been tough to let you in on the details. On Tuesday, Monique Lhuillier gave me a chance to go behind the scenes to view the industrial inpiration for the hair behind the show. The artists from Aveda combined Audrey Hepburn [...]

Sub-prime loans bite back
By Ian Mylchreest
HSBC is the first big bank to admit profligate lending is hurting its bottom line, reports Bloomberg. The bank says it will set aside 20 percent more than originally anticipated as the slow housing market creates more bad loans than had been expected. And it’s the sub-prime loans that are causing trouble. The news service estimates [...]

Hard Rock and other Case Bets
By David McKee
Morgans Hotel Group CEO Ed Scheetz might as well forget about trying to keep Vegas on tenterhooks about his ’secret’ plan for upgrading his newly acquired Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. While the local newspaper of record rolled over and played dead, enterprising local blogger Vegas Eye got the real skinny on what Scheetz has [...]
