The fall — and the rise? — of Fremont East
And there we were, supposedly more than a thousand of us waiting for a handful of signs to be lit up on the newly christened Fremont East Entertainment District. It was past 8 p.m. on Aug. 24, and Mayor McCheese — aka Oscar Goodman — and some City Council members weren’t finished patting each other [...]

Rage to co-headline Vegoose
According to Billboard.com, Rage Against the Machine will co-headline the third Vegoose Music Festival, slated for the last weekend of October.
The recently reunited act has been performing at select American festivals, starting with Coachella this past April, and had booked a gig Oct. 27 at Voodoo Music Festival in New Orleans. It’s likely the [...]

Concert round-up: Bloc Party and BRMC
We rock fans have had a hell of a June thus far. I can’t recall another month where there were so many appealing concerts taking place on Las Vegas’ various stages for such a sustained period of time. Hell, The Police and Roger Waters played the same venue the same weekend. I wrote about those [...]

Morrissey at the Pearl, June 9
CityLife lost its Pearl virginity this past week with the sold-out Morrissey concert, and it’s hard to say what was more impressive: Mozzer himself or the venue.
Let’s start with the Pearl. Las Vegas has no shortage of concert venues proper, but there’s something special about the Pearl that puts it a notch up from the [...]

My Pride weekend
Eight years after inching out of the closet and five after coming out in earnest, this homosexual is still trying to wrap his brain around the whole phenomenon of gay Pride festivals. I have attended four parades, three festivals and one wretched circuit party — all linked to Pride weekends — and while I think [...]

What if Jacko was one of us?
I can’t get over the fact Michael Jackson — if only temporarily — is a local. Yes, Wacko Jacko has a home in the 702, apparently a big fan of Las Vegas and mulling over possible offers to set up shop in a casino showroom a la Celine, Barry and, if only for a few [...]

Grammys
So watching the Grammy Awards on Feb. 11 might’ve been a total waste of time had I not just set up a wireless Internet connection in my house. Nonetheless, a handful of observations, because I know you care:
1.) Even though I had been rooting (though "rooting" may be a strong word) for Gnarls Barkley [...]

Preliminary Coachella lineup announced
Did the pretty-standard-really roster for Vegoose 2006 turn you off from music festivals? Hopefully not, because the mother of all alternative music events is not only fast approaching, but located only 3-1/2 hours away.
The Coachella Music and Arts Festival will take place April 27-29 — organizers added a third day to the proceedings — [...]

The Year in Gigging
As you may know, last week CityLife published its annual year-in-review issue, and in that issue, the paper’s critics listed their favorite albums of 2006. One thing I wanted to include in summing up the year in music was a ranking of my favorite concerts and DJ gigs. Limited editorial space, of course, forced me [...]

Not that there’s nothing wrong with it…
I stumbled upon an intriguing news report recently. Don Kaplan of the New York Post writes:
THE K-K-Kramer scandal murdered Michael Richards’ career - but it’s doing wonders for sales of the latest "Seinfeld" DVD.
Season 7 of the popular sitcom is outselling the Season 6 set (released on the same day last year) by [...]
