Federal regulations protect industry
By Ian Mylchreest
The business community usually abhors federal regulation, but there is a new kind that many industries are embracing, reports the Los Angeles Times. In a series of apparently unrelated rules changes from various agencies, new regulations have been written to include protection from lawsuits. The examples the paper cites are: Suits for auto roof failures have been [...]

Another case of arrested development
By Ian Mylchreest
What was that about lies, damned lies and statistics? The Las Vegas Sun gave us a classic example of the last over the weekend. The "independent study" it commissioned purports to show that the water returns and the new taxes give the city a far better deal than it is now getting with Royal Links. This [...]

How far can the EPA go in regulating development is about to come to a head with two Michigan cases that will be heard in the Supreme Court. The cases involve developers who wanted to build on wetlands but ran foul of state authorities enforcing federal law, reports the New York Times. One developer filled in [...]

Gibbons speaks! We take credit!
By Steve Sebelius
Some of you may doubt the power we wield here at Various Things & Stuff. Well, doubt no more. Just one day after we called in our column in CityLife for U.S. Rep. Jim Gibbons to declare his stance on the Tax and Spending Control initiative, Gibbons broke months of silence and came out in [...]

Airlines lost more bags in 2005
By Ian Mylchreest
Here's another scary thought for travelers. Nationwide, airlines lost 10,000 bags a day last year, reports USA Today. That's a 23 percent jump from the year before says the U.S. Department of Transportation. Passengers reported 3.5 million lost bags. And here's the good news: Most of them were found. US Airways was the worst offender but [...]

Inflation looms despite cheaper gas
By Ian Mylchreest
Wholesale prices rose moderately last month reports the Associated Press. Gasoline dropped and that balanced a jump in other sectors. The bad news is that the core rate (everything except food and energy) jumped 0.4 percent which would add up to an annual rate of nearly 5 percent. And that would be a big jump. Higher [...]

Gambling still a big issue outside Las Vegas
By Ian Mylchreest
Two reports in the Review-Journal remind us how seriously much of the rest of the country takes gambling. In an interview with NBA Commissioner, the paper reports "the city's legalized sports books remain a source of fear and loathing for NBA leaders." Stern hints that Las Vegas would be a leading candidate for any franchise looking [...]

TV really has become the "idiot" box
By Len Butcher
I don’t watch much television. Not that I don’t like it, it’s just that there is so little on worth watching. I, like most of us, I’m sure, welcomed the growth of cable channels. I remember a number of years ago doing a story for a major magazine on the growth of cable and [...]

Fun with City Hall
By Steve Sebelius
Says the private law firm investigating the city of Las Vegas' sweetheart deal with golf course developer Bill Walters: You're dragging your feet in getting us documents! Says the city, in reply: Are not! Why we just handed you more than 18,000 pages of documents on … um, Monday. Yeah, it was Monday, because [...]
