A look back at 2006
By Len Butcher
As I sit here waiting to go out for dinner this New Year’s Eve, and welcome in 2007, I thought it appropriate that I take a look back on 2006. Like all years, a lot of things happened, with me and the world at large. Personal things I will keep to myself, but for events [...]

Grinch-style Christmas at Harrah's?
By David McKee
Christmas 2005 at Harrah's Entertainment was said to have been an extravaganza, with ice skaters and all manner of frou-frou. This year's Christmas party, I'm told, was a low-budget affair. Supposedly it consisted of a two-person version of The Nutcracker, two or three prize giveaways and was over by 9 p.m. (And to think that [...]

National housing outlook picks up
By Ian Mylchreest
The latest numbers from the National Association of Realtors are cheering news for the industry, reports USA Today. For the third month out of four, sales of existing homes rose. This time, the November sales topped the previous month by 0.6 percent. The NAR's chief economist tells the paper that this means the housing slump [...]

New home sales were up in November
By Ian Mylchreest
New government figures released Wednesday show that home sales rose 3.4 percent in November after a 3.8 percent drop in October, reports the New York Times. The more important figure is that it's still a big drop-off from the late 2005 figures. Sales in the West fell 9 percent but that's not such good news because [...]

SEC rejigs option rule
By Ian Mylchreest
One man's technicality is another man's giveaway on corporate governance, it seems. The Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Christopher Cox says the regulator is merely tweaking the rule on disclosing the full value of executive options but, reports the New York Times, others are much more skeptical and see it as a giveaway to companies trying to obfuscate [...]

Car title lenders face scrutiny
By Ian Mylchreest
There are some straws in the wind that legislatures across the country are thinking of more stringent regulation of the car title loan business, reports USA Today. The business thrives in Las Vegas like the pay day lenders but elsewhere in the country it is getting scrutiny for the high interest rates that these loans attract. The industry [...]

No-talent Rosie needs to keep her mouth shut
By Len Butcher
Can anyone be more annoying than CNN’s Nancy Grace? For a while, I didn’t think so, but then along came Rosie O’Donnell, who easily grabbed that honor from Nancy, and added “obnoxious” to it. I’d forgotten how much I disliked this woman from her days as the gushing, fawning, phony host of her own afternoon [...]

California real estate market bottoms out
By Ian Mylchreest
Golden State real estate agents are saying that the market there has leveled out and they think it will pick up next year, reports the Los Angeles Times. This could be good news for the local real estate industry because so many of our sales start out with a home being sold in California to fund the new [...]

The search for civilization continues…
By Steve Sebelius
As we understand it, District Court Judge Douglas Herndon's ruling on the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act only grants a preliminary injunction against enforcement with respect to the criminal penalties for smoking violations. The act itself will be allowed to go into effect, but as a civil construct, not a criminal one. Smokers who break [...]
