Fashion Week, Day Two

By Susan Stapleton
February 4, 2007

Day two under the tents and I’m already trying to conserve energy during this long week. Yes, Fashion Week seems like it should be dazzling with all the celebrities and fashions, and it is, it is. But the waiting and standing and walking all over the city in heels can take their toll on you, especially in temperatures in the teens.

I usually look forward to the Alice Roi show, but season was an exception to the rule. I did see fringe, which I expected to pick up steam after it became a trend for this spring. Roi used the character Madeline as her muse for her show, implementing Peter Pan collars and dark assymetrical skirts along with brocade in her styles,

The Abaete show was my favorite so far. So many dresses that I wanted to see in my closet. Ruching, bubble dresses, stoles, driving gloves and patent leather on everything from coats and shoes to dresses. Most of the collection marched down the runway in black and white, but hints of Navaho influences touched some of the pieces. Oh, and who could forget the Swarovski details. Just think mod and don a British attitude and you’ll love this look. You can find Soho-based Laura Poretzky’s collections at Intermix.

Sass & Bide offered the entertainment value I expected as well. The Australian design team always has a theme, and this year was deemed the Lovehawk Season. The collection featured vintage embellishments and flowing silhouettes that look great on different shapes because of the draping. Beautiful orange and white, kimono-sleeved dresses followed cinched-waist swing jackets. Velvet and gold lame showed up on pieces, along with embellished wool and lots of tapered pants.

Which brings me to the first opportunity I have to mention some trends I’ve noticed so far. Every show so far has featured ponytails, so feel good about pulling your hair back next fall. Fringe will be a big trend this spring and again next fall. And dresses are definitely here to stay. Black will always be your best friend, but don’t forget about white, the new black for spring and a recurring trend so far in the collections. You can even mix them in black and white graphic patterns. And think volume this fall. Pair anything with leggings or skinny jeans you you’ll be in fashion. And the color to buy up? Hunter green.

Why tell you this now? So you can invest wisely this spring with the trends that will be huge in the coming months.

See you tomorrow at the tents.
