Katrina Pushes Gas Prices Past $3 Mark on Gulf Coast

By Dave Berns
August 30, 2005

Reuters reports that Hurricane Katrina could be the catalyst that pushes nationwide gas prices above $3 a gallon.

“The spike in wholesale prices from below $2 last Friday came after Hurricane Katrina plowed through the Gulf of Mexico and made landfall near New Orleans, forcing shut at least eight refineries in Louisiana and Mississippi and slowing production from two others,” Reuters reports.

“The shut refineries and plants with reduced production account for about 15 percent of U.S. refinery production.

“Tuesday, a gallon of gasoline traded in the Houston-based Gulf Coast physical marketing hub cost about $3.15 a gallon — sharply higher than the national average retail price of about $2.60 a gallon.

Russia is sending over rescue crews to assist with the search for survivors in Louisiana. Iran is donating barrels of oil to relieve the disabled oil producers in Alabama. Turkey and Thailand are sending makeshift tents to help house the millions of newly homeless Americans. Indonesia is collecting medical supplies to help control the spread of disease sure to come from the mosquito onslaught. The rest of the world is lending its moral support.

Ok, I made that up.

Those are just some of the countries that have received US assistance in the recent past in response to tragedies - without obligations.

There is no international relief effort for America’s tragedies. And we don’t expect any. Americans will take care of their own… again.

Interesting point Kira. After reading your comment, I realized I hadn’t even considered the possibility of an international relief effort. Not even after watching hours of hurricane news coverage.

Did I not think of this because this is America and we have always taken care of our own and everyone else? Or is it because all the other nations just don’t care?

Surely the UK would help, but maybe they are too busy with the recent terrorist bombings. What about Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Japan ….

Would there be an international relief effort if Katrina hit a different country? Foreign aid would at least be given. I guess we are too rich to receive foreign aid. :-/

Here is an interesting editorial:

I was glad to see after several days that other countries have started to offer aid to the Katrina disaster.

I have seen more countries offer aid since this list was published - I believe Kuwait was one of them.
