Poker boom may be over

By Ian Mylchreest

The craze for poker may be fading reports Reuters.

Local gaming expert Bill Thompson of UNLV says the card game is a fad and it’s fading fast.

The casinos are still adding poker rooms - most recently the South Coast added a card room before it opened - but they did quite well catering to the “niche” last year reports the American Gaming Association.

Casinos in Nevada and New Jersey raked in $151 million, a 45 percent jump in the take.

The big fall has come in TV ratings just as the World Poker Tour and Harrah’s and all the other poker promoters seem to have created near saturation coverage for their tournaments. That would explain why the chip and card sets for playing at home are being discounted at Wal-Mart and Target.
