The buzz about metrosexuals is a bit old but American Male, a national chain of men’s salons is set to open its 15th store in Las Vegas next month, reports the Associated Press. The chain caters to men who want manicures and hair coloring but don’t want to sit in a traditional beauty salon.
Sales of men’s beauty products rose 13 percent in 2004 and are expected to reach $10 billion by 2008, up 25 percent from 2004, according to Packaged Facts, a unit of MarketResearch.com in New York.
The CEO of American Male’s parent tells the AP that men don’t like “the smell” of women’s salons.
On the other hand, “Men are getting more vain,” Marian Salzman, author of “The Future of Men” and director of strategic content at ad agency JWT in New York, tells AP. “There’s more pressure to look young and sexy.”
