Hotel chain could be starting a trend

Westin Hotels decision to ban smoking at all its properties could be the start of a trend, reports USA Today. The company annnounced late last year that it would go smoke-free in all its hotels.

A survey by the paper shows that at least 200 hotels nationwide are non-smoking and two counties in Ontario also ban smoking in all hotels. Other chains will follow Westin’s lead, but it may take about six months, Ed Watkins, editor of trade magazine Lodging Hospitality, tells the paper. Most will wait so “it doesn’t look like they’re copying,” he says.

And even if they don’t go smoke-free, others are making most of their rooms non-smoking. It can’t come soon enough for me.

Of course, hotel-casinos are a completely different kind of beast and gamblers seem to prefer to risk their money with a hit of nicotine. But, then I don’t need to take a hotel room in Las Vegas.

My estimation is within 10 years time smoking in public places will completely stop, and with any luck smoking will seriously decline. Modern society do not want smoking any more. Its selfish, unhealthy and should be discouraged!
