The biggest city in Arizona is facing some of the same growth problems as Las Vegas, and it looks like they’re doing some of the same things to curb sprawl and create affordable housing. A developer who specializes in infill projects is taking a blighted corner of the city that once houses a women’s prison, and turning it into nearly 200 townhomes, reports the Arizona Republic.
CEO Paul Johnson says the project is designed to attract working professionals who want a shorter commute to downtown. That seems to be the market for projects like Soho Lofts and Signature homes’ new development on W. Alta behind UMC.
On Tuesday, the mayor was on hand to swing the wrecking ball and the project still needs permits. It is expected to be ready for move in early next year.
