Las Vegas-based Citadel Broadcasting will be moving into some major markets with the acquisition of ABC Radio and 22 of Disney's stations, reports Reuters. The deal will leave Disney stockholders with 52 percent of the new radio company and Disney is keeping some cash for ABC Radio's value.
Citadel is not getting the prize brands like ESPN Radio and Disney Radio. And the deal is being structured to make it tax-free to Disney shareholders.
The news is not a surprise although Disney was not exactly bowled over by the offers to ease out of the radio business. There ought to be ways to make money from the big market stations but radio is a tough sell with so many other audio options, particularly on the daily commute.
And funnily enough, even though it's headquartered here, Citadel doesn't own any stations in this market.
