Locals still not sure about locals casinos

The impending opening of Red Rock Station has not placated all the local opposition to the new resort, reports the Associated Press. And some residents say that the neighborhood casino rules are too lax and should be revisited.

“Newer, so-called “locals casinos” are larger than ever, and they also appeal to a tourist audience that some residents don’t want so close to home,” reports the news service. And that’s going to be the point. Red Rock Station and Green Valley Ranch are a new hybrid casino, which embodies a kindler, gentler tourist resort and a more luxurious locals joint.

Red Rock’s advertising shows the schizonphrenia. It’s already advertising that it’s bingo room will be right outside the valet parking but it is also touting a new nightclub, Cherry, that presumably will compete with Light, Tryst and similar Strip establishments.

The paper quotes one analyst who says that locals will have to gamble 10 percent more to keep up revenue levels but these are not purely locals casinos. One Summerlin resident says there’s no place further west to build but we can expect to see more of these debates as the South Strip resorts lie South Coast try to pull in both locals and mid-market tourists.
