David’s Bridal, the wedding outfitting operation that has a big operation on West Sahara to cater to the Strip’s wedding industry, has been sold, reports Reuters. Federated Department Stores has been shopping the business around as part of a rationalization and the deal has taken a while to finish. There are 269 David’s stores nationwide.
The price was $850 million. The bulk of that, $750 million, will be paid by Leonard Green & Partners LP, which has done some other retail restructuring and they’ll get the bridal business. The After Hours Formalwear business will be bought by the Men’s Wearhouse for $100 million. That white satin is obviously much more lucrative than those rental tuxedos.
The sale is one of the small and final pieces of a restructuring that has been going on in the department store sector. The buyout of May’s by Federated has rationalized the sector and revived what was seen as the dinosaur of retailing, reports the New York Times.
It’s all about the clothes. There’s tons more choice in the new Macy’s than at Banana Republic and GAP. And it’s also about not having competition and making the changing rooms more spacious and elegant. And the comeback is just in time for the big holiday shopping season.
