Quiznos still struggling with a makeover

We are slightly hopeful to see USA Today report that one of our favorite sandwich shops is in for a further makeover. Former Burger King honcho Greg Brenneman is taking the helm. He like a couple of other private equity groups now has a stake in the company as they try to revive it.

As he did at BK, Brenneman will be setting Quizno’s up for a public offering but he will have to get the franchisees in a much better frame of mind and improve the profits first. Our local joint serves good sandwiches but because the food is made to order the service seems slow at peak times and it’s got to be more labor intensive than the average fast food place, where so much is pre-packaged. In the sandwich space, it’s hard to charge that much more than McDonald’s no matter how much better the product is.

And the company has been, to say the least, promiscuous in setting up stores in every new strip mall that goes up in Las Vegas. That’s got to be slicing the territories too fine for individual franchisees. Brenneman says of Quizno’s: "It’s a company that’s much bigger than its brand." He means he’ll have to build the brand a whole lot or reduce stores, or most likely both, to get it into shape for the IPO. Best of luck.
