Bad karma in Singapore & other news

By David McKee
June 25, 2006

According to the Taipei Times, whoever wins the resort concession for Singapore’s Sentosa Island might be facing some metaphysical complications. Seems that Sentosa was the sight of some Japanese war crimes during World War II and some inauspicious vibes might be lingering in the air. A few feng shui experts might set matters aright — and they’re already offering design tips to the eventual concession winner. Being a superstitious fellow myself, I’d take their advice … successive casino failures on the Aladdin site in Las Vegas have only reinforced the urban legend that it’s built atop ancient Indian burial grounds.

From the Nice Guys Finish First file: Congratulations to outgoing Aristocrat Gaming President (American region) Gavin Isaacs, who is leaving Aristocrat in order to remain in our fair (if hellishly hot) city. Starting Sept. 1, Isaacs will be the new COO of Bally Technologies.

Isaacs came to the forefront at Aristocrat after former CEO Des Randall got the chop three years ago for, among other things, inflating Aristocrat’s earnings and living too high on the hog. Issacs has received much of the credit for the impressive turnaround that was achieved on his watch. Bally Technologies has had its own struggles of late, including missed financial-reporting deadlines. Isaacs may be just what the doctor ordered.

Mixed news for Boyd Gaming, courtesy of Majestic Research. Both Boyd and Station Casinos continue to take locals-play market share away from everybody else. The bad news is that Boyd’s new South Coast ranks eighth among locals casinos in terms of play — behind three other Boyd properties (Sam’s Town, The Orleans and Suncoast).

The advent of Station’s Red Rock megaresort has pushed most other locals casinos down a notch or two, except Millennium Gaming’s Rampart Casino, going from #11 in Q205 to #15 a year later. Similarly, South Coast pushed Ed Roski’s Silverton from #15 to #18. Terrible’s and Jerry’s Nugget have been elbowed out of Majestic’s top 20 altogether.

Hey David:

How in the world does Majestic get data on local “play” by property. The GCB doesn’t publish it. Is it some sort of survey?

According to Majestic itself, they get their info through “proprietary data (that) provides real-time insight into casino game usage and is an accurate forecaster for company-specific net revenue.”
