AbraMafia in the news again

By David McKee
October 2, 2006

Although I'm still on the mend from a nasty cold, it seems like old times. I come back to Stiffs & Georges and—wouldn't you know it?—our old pal "Casino Jack" Abramoff is back in the news again. Today's Washington Post reveals that the capo di tutti scumbags billed his clients for 400-plus contacts with the Bush White House. I tell ya, the AbraMafia scandal is a gift that just keeps on giving.

Since Casino Jack was notorious for padding his billing statements and fleecing his lobbying clients (at least the Native American ones that he infamously termed "troglodytes" and "monkeys"), I'm inclined to give the White House the benefit of the doubt when it says that most of the alleged contacts never took place. However, it appears that Karl Rove assistant Susan Paulson may not be in the clear, particularly as far as being the recipient of Abramoffian largesse. Current RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman also appears to have carried some H2O for Casino Jack when the former was a White House staffer.

Of course, the real losers in this are Native American tribes who are trying to get their case heard in Washington. Their lobbyists will be viewed as suspect messengers for some time to come, thanks to the capers of the AbraMafia.
