Case bets

A smattering of news items to send you off for the weekend …

• Small wonder that Harrah’s Entertainment is sufficiently interested in the British market to up the price it’s paying for London Clubs International. According to The Guardian, smart casino operators have been able to circumvent government-imposed caps on slot capacity by installing copious quantities of electronic roulette. Regardless of whether or not Harrah’s lands the "supercasino" concession, it appears that this is where the real money is to be made.

• Everybody’s getting into this here blogging thing. The newest entrants include the National Center for Responsible Gambling. (I’m sure the Rev. Tom Grey would call "responsible gambling" oxymoronic, but that’s a whole ‘nother debate.) In addition to publicizing its Nov. 12-14 conference, being held at The Rio, the NCRG will use its blog to draw attention to the latest research, to what’s being done overseas about disordered gambling, and so forth. The present color scheme of the NCRG blog is absolute murder on the eyes, so let’s hope their techs tweak it into more viewer-friendly tones. Until then, welcome to the fold!

• The Business Press‘ very own Valerie Miller will be appearing on the next installment of Lunchtime with Ira, which tapes Monday at the Las Vegas Hilton. Valerie will submit to the affable questioning of host (and all-around cool guy) Ira David Sternberg.

Among Valerie’s fellow guests will be NHRA star Erica Enders, who’s been in town to sign autographs at the Imperial Palace. Which gives us an excuse to post these Enders photos we just got from the IP’s Pat Getter. Enjoy … and tune in or download a podcast
