Boy, is my face red! Last night, I erroneously scribbled that Isle of Capri had bought Casino Aztar Evansville from Columbia Sussex. D’oh!
Two eagle-eyed readers (and counting) point out, what Isle of Capri bought was Casino Aztar Caruthersville, for the tidy sum of $45 million. This no doubt comes as a relief to the state of Missouri, which found itself in the pickle of having to run the casino on behalf of Columbia Sussex, the latter’s CEO, William Yung III having made himself thoroughly unwelcome with gambling regulators in the Show-Me State. In Yung’s case, it was the Show-Me-the-Door State.
Speaking of Yung, who is quickly emerging as the Attila the Hun of casino operators, it looks like he’s up to his usual slash-and-burn tactics in Evansville. Seventy to 90 employees, however, is nothing compared to the rampage Yung conducted at the Atlantic City Tropicana, where Spectrum Gaming Group’s Joe Weinert puts the body count around 500. You read that right: 500.
Anyway, if there’s anything left of the Evansville boat once Yung gets done, that means it’s still in play for Ameristar Casinos. Also, the latest spin out of the Tropicana is that Columbia Sussex will be taking a more gradual approach to its decimation of the Las Vegas Tropicana. "They’re dreaming," a Trop-savvy individual once said of Yung’s original demolition-and-construction timetable. Guess the realities of building in contemporary Vegas are starting to sink in, even to time-and-motion experts.
